DavidRio Chai

While it’s true I mostly take pictures of beautiful women (my excuse: they’re soft and they smell nice), I am capable of shooting inanimate objects. Here’s an image I did for a chai tea company which funded my Burning Man photo expenses this year, bless ‘em.

The last product shoot of note that I did was entirely different, but extremely lucrative. I’m still getting visitors to my site daily via http://badvibrations.com because of that one . . .

I’ve got a piece in a APA Charity Photo Auction this Thursday, with proceeds benefiting the Edgewood Center For Children and Families. (Update: It sold for $150.)

Yes, it’s been a while - more than a month - but I have been busy. I had a couple of pictures in this month’s Japan Airlines inflight magazine, Winds. Not bad, considering it’s World Cup month, although next time I’ll ask for free tickets . . . I’ve also posted tearsheets of my pictures in Teen People, the San Francisco Chronicle, June’s Where Magazine, July’s San Francisco Bride magazine and the new CA-Image sourcebook.

In the process of moving to a new server at Laughing Squid, I temporarily broke my scripts, but you’ll (maybe) be glad to hear I got the postcards and guestbook working again.

The Hips saga continues; it’s now playing as a slideshow outside an elevator in a San Francisco financial district office building. If you’re in the neighborhood, go take a look at 300 California Street (@ Battery). It should be there until the end of July.

My exhibit at Friends Cafe (207 Valencia Street @ Duboce, San Francsico) has been extended yet another month, but I’m looking for a new venue. I’ve also got images posted on a music website, HBR1.com although it doesn’t work on my Mac.

I’ll post new galleries as soon as I catch up with stuff. I know how to take pictures, but running a business is an entirely different matter. Speaking of which, in a couple of weeks I’ll celebrate my first anniversary of supporting myself by photography alone. I don’t want to set a date for the party yet, because I’m waiting to hear about a *very* cool shoot.

My new intern arrived a couple of weeks ago from Baltimore and she’s been a great help so far. Unfortunately, she leaves in August and I need to find someone for mid-August onwards, preferably one who’s willing to come to Burning Man. Any takers?

Just 40 minutes before the eModel/Options Talent Group story aired on KRON-TV last night, I got a call to say they’d cut my interview from the piece, but might use it if they do a follow up. Unfortunately, I’d already sent out my mailing . . . On the plus side, they did a great hidden camera expose. Hats off for solid local TV journalism, something we don’t see enough of here in the States. You can see the video segment here.

Tish update: there’s something wrong with the “total collected” counter on the Tish’s Medical Fund page. It reads a grand total of $0.00, when in fact it passed $200 as of this morning. A big thank you to everyone who’s helped so far. I set this up without Tish’s knowledge and she was touched by all the support she’s gotten so far. She gets her first check for $215 this afternoon…

I’m getting my three and a half minutes of fame tonight when my interview about the widely criticised eModel (aka Options Talent Group) airs on this evening’s KRON-TV’s six o’clock news, San Francsico channel four. I don’t know how much screen time, if any, I’ll get, but check it out if you can.

A good friend of mine, Tish Bunk, was recently diagnosed with stage one ovarian cancer and despite having some health insurance, already faces medical bills of $25,000+. She’s a very cool woman (former dolphin trainer and whale studier) who up until recently refused all offers of financial help. Now she’s accepted that she could use a little help, so I’ve set up a “Tish’s Medical Fund” page where people can securely donate as little as $1 through Amazon. Every little bit helps.

I was just doing a little egosurfing with a cool new search engine, Kartoo.com when I came across a site which copied a remarkable amount of my website design, down to the shadows around my pictures and the font (Century Gothic) in my nav bar. I’ve been copied before, but this time it really seems just a case of sincere flattery. Oh, and although Amazon *still* haven’t fixed the counter, the Tish fund is up to $300.
